Yellow grass rarely has just one cause. The most common culprits are nitrogen deficiency, overwatering or underwatering, compacted soil, lawn disease, pet urine spots, excessive thatch, and grub damage below the surface. Identifying the pattern — isolated spots vs. widespread yellowing — helps you narrow down the cause quickly.

2Diagnose Before You Treat

Pull a small plug of turf and check the roots. White, healthy roots point to a nutrient or watering issue. Brown or absent roots suggest grubs, fungal disease, or severe drought stress. Circular patches with defined edges often indicate fungal disease. Irregular yellow areas near trees may signal shade stress or root competition rather than a treatable problem.

3Fix Watering Problems

Both overwatering and underwatering cause yellowing. Most lawns need about 1 inch of water per week, including rainfall. Water deeply 2–3 times per week rather than lightly every day — deep watering encourages roots to grow down while frequent shallow watering keeps roots at the surface where they are vulnerable to heat and drought.

4Treat Nutrient Deficiencies

Pale yellow or lime-green grass across the whole lawn usually signals nitrogen deficiency. Apply a balanced lawn fertilizer and you should see the color improve within 1–2 weeks. If yellowing is between the leaf veins (interveinal chlorosis), iron deficiency may be the cause — a fertilizer with iron or a separate iron supplement applied to the soil can correct this quickly.

5Address Pests and Disease

Irregular yellow patches that keep expanding even with proper watering and feeding may be lawn fungal disease or grub damage. Check for signs of brown patch disease (smoke-ring edges) or lift yellowed turf to look for C-shaped grubs below. Treat fungal issues with a labeled fungicide and grub problems with an appropriate grub control product applied at the right time of year.
